This medium sized, lidded, blue crystalline jar was hand thrown on the potters wheel using pure porcelain clay. The lid has a sculpted finial to add to the individuality of the finished piece. It should be noted that lids are incredibly difficult to produce in crystalline pottery, because of the way the glaze runs when it is fired , requiring carefully made glaze catches for both the lid and the jar itself. In this case the lid has a slightly loose fitting but it matches the jar very well.
Crystalline glazes are hard to produce and it is very rare to find lidded pieces like this. The blue crystalline glaze has produced clear crystals that float around the form rather like clouds. The crystals you can see are not an added decoration but form naturally during the glaze firing so are entirely unique to this piece. This lidded jar could be used as a pet urn but is not large enough for people.
This piece took over two weeks to complete and the result is a very individual creation which is enhanced by the sculpted finial and dark blue crystal formations. This is a beautiful example of crystalline ceramics which are themselves comparatively rare in the pottery world. I do hope you like this piece of ceramic art.
