This beautiful deep blue crystalline glazed vase with a hand sculpted rim, standing 8 inches tall and about 7 inches wide, is a fine example of the art of crystalline ceramics. The blue crystalline glaze has produced a series of darker blue clear crystals that create a floating cloud like pattern around the form. The hand sculpted rim adds dynamism and individuality to the piece, enhanced by the lovely crystal formations. The whole vase has an organic feel.
The vase was hand thrown on the potters wheel before being trimmed and sculpted when leather hard. The vase was then fired twice to very high temperatures creating the crystalline finish. The crystals are formed naturally during the firing process and are not an added decoration. The pattern they form is entirely random so no two pieces are the same.
Crystalline ceramics is a difficult and time consuming process, which explains why very few potters specialise in this area. That said I find this genre totally fascinating and this vase is a fine example of the art. It would make a wonderful addition to any collection or indeed as a very special and individual gift.
